In wartime, when the risks of explosions and shelling have become part of our reality, every step towards protecting property is of paramount importance. That's why more and more Ukrainians are considering installing security film on their windows, trying to understand whether it's just a trend or a real necessity.

  • what armored films are, what they are made of, and whether they will protect against shrapnel;
  • what types of screen protectors exist and how to choose the right one for you;
  • Does the security film affect the thermal insulation and appearance of the window?

What are armor films, what are they made of, and what are they used for?

– Security film is a multi-layered polyester with additional reinforcing layers and high-strength adhesive. Its main function is to prevent the glass from shattering into fragments and to reduce the risk of injury or damage during an explosion, impact, or attempted break-in. In practice, we see that properly selected and installed film can save a window even after a nearby explosion, – says Oleksandr Sydorenko.

What types of bulletproof films are best for Ukrainian conditions, where there is a threat of explosions and shelling?

For conditions where there is a risk of explosions, the optimal films are those with a thickness of 200 microns or more, preferably with explosion-proof certificates, explains the expert:

"In our work, we prefer films with a multi-layer structure and increased elasticity – they better withstand the shock wave and do not 'tear' when the frame is deformed."

How to choose the correct thickness of security film depending on the type of house or apartment?

The expert noted that in new buildings with modern double-glazed windows, it is possible to work with 200-300 microns. In old buildings or with large windows, it is necessary to use 300 to 400 microns and, of course, with fastening around the perimeter of the frame. We always take into account the direction of a possible impact, the height of the floor, and the quality of the glass itself.

Does the presence of security film on a window affect thermal insulation?

"Not significantly, but there's a nuance: the film can slightly increase sun protection and reduce room heating. Heat loss in cold weather remains almost unchanged, but we recommend combining security film with energy-efficient glazing for maximum effect," explains Oleksandr Sydorenko.

How does installing security film on windows affect their appearance and visibility?

High-quality window armor film does not change the appearance of the glass and does not create visible contours, says the CEO of Sheriff Engineering Systems:

– During installation, the film is tucked under the side and bottom glazing beads, so no lines or outlines are visible around the perimeter. The only exception may be the top edge in cases where the window design does not allow the film to be tucked under the sealant – then a barely noticeable strip may be visible, but with proper installation, even that is almost invisible.

Is it possible to install armor film yourself, or is it better to contact professionals?

Technically it's possible, but experience shows that without experience it's easy to make bubbles, distortions, or insufficient adhesion to the edges. We have repeatedly re-glued "do-it-yourself" attempts – and it always turns out more expensive.

How to properly care for the film after installation?

The expert advises against washing the window for the first 7–10 days, and against using abrasives and harsh chemicals. After that, only soft cloths and neutral detergents should be used.

"We have clients who have had the film installed for over 8 years and it looks brand new, thanks to proper care."

What are the disadvantages of armor film?

– It won't make the glass "bulletproof" – it's important to explain this to clients. Also, the film won't protect against significant frame deflection or complete glass unit failure if the window fasteners are weak. And another point – you can't get something cheap and high-quality: saving on materials often leads to wasted expenses, – explained Oleksandr Sydorenko.

How much does armor film and its installation cost on average?

The cost of armored film with installation depends on its thickness, protection class, and brand, says the CEO of Sheriff Engineering Systems:

– On average, the price ranges from 800 to 1,500 UAH per m² including professional installation. However, it is not entirely correct to evaluate it only by the price of the material – first and foremost, it is an investment in the safety of people's lives and health, and only then in the protection of property.

High-quality security film can hold glass fragments together during an explosion, impact, or attempted break-in, significantly reducing the risk of injury. It also makes access more difficult for intruders, giving time to react or call for help. Considering the potential damage from broken glass or injuries, the cost of high-quality film with professional installation is a small price to pay for such an important level of protection.
