More than a third of Ukrainians (37%) support same-sex marriage, according to the findings of a poll conducted by the Rating sociological group ahead of the Independence Day.

37% of surveyed Ukrainians support the legalization of same-sex marriages in Ukraine. At the same time, 42% of respondents were against, including 33% who were categorically against. Another 22% were undecided.

It is noted that younger respondents support the introduction of same-sex marriages in Ukraine more than older ones, and women show more tolerance for such unions.

The survey was conducted using the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) method on August 16-20, 2023. The anonymous online interview was conducted by the Rating sociological group on the Rating Online platform. The sample is 6,050 respondents. The sampling error does not exceed 1.5%.

The LGBT Human Rights Nash Svit Center added that the results of the Rating survey confirm the results of the survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), which was commissioned by Nash Svit in June 2023.

According to a study by KIIS, the introduction of registered partnerships for same-sex couples in Ukraine, which are generally similar to marriage, was supported by 28%, 39% were against, and 26% stated that they did not care.

"Thus, according to the results of all public opinion polls conducted after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukrainian society has a mostly tolerant attitude towards the legalization of same-sex unions – approving or indifferent – and this attitude is constantly improving. According to the sociological group Rating, the number of their supporters has already closely approached the number of opponents," the LGBT center Nash Svit added.

The draft law on civil partnerships was registered in the Verkhovna Rada in March 2023. A registered partnership is an alternative for couples who are unable or unwilling to marry.

A petition for registered partnerships for same-sex and opposite-sex couples also garnered the necessary 25,000 votes.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, responded to the petition in support of draft law No. 9103 "On the Institute of Registered Partnerships".
