Cherkasy's heritage rises: Two centuries later, the windmill stands anew
A two-hundred-year-old windmill has been restored in the Zvenyhorodka Raion of the Cherkasy Oblast. Skilled craftsmen with expertise in mill restoration were involved in the project, Suspilne reported.
The windmill's blades, which had been damaged by a storm, were also restored. Specialized skills were needed to make the necessary sails. Craftsmen have completed the first phase of the reconstruction, with plans for the two-hundred-year-old windmill to function in the future. A charitable foundation provided 300,000 hryvnia for the restoration of the mill's sails.
This windmill has stood for two centuries on the border of three villages. It is the only survivor of 28, according to Lyudmyla Shevchenko, the director of the national reserve "Taras Shevchenko's Homeland".
"Not far from here is the Hupalivshchyna area, mentioned by Shevchenko in his poem 'Haydamaky'. That's where he grazed his lambs behind the village. These are the paths and the place of the poet's childhood," Lyudmyla Shevchenko added.
Once a bustling place, it attracted dozens of people, echoing the conversations of villagers and business discussions. "Business meetings, making concrete agreements. Grain was brought here for milling, and the miller took 10 percent of the grain. That was the economic policy," noted Vadym Liashenko, the head of the public organization "Ecological Movement of Cherkasy.
